Dylan Fugate raced on Tuesday, June 25th in the kid kart class at the C-Tech Manufacturing Motorplex at Road America. There were 12 kids in his class, 5 with Comer engines which was a nice change from the normally Briggs lineup and provided for some great racing opportunities. We missed the first practice due to the pull cord on Engine #2 breaking and had to swap engines. Luckily we were able to get the faster one installed in time for practice #2. Unluckily the jet had came loose at some point since we last ran it and Dylan was going about 50% of normal speed for the whole practice. We were able to find the issue and get it fixed before the racing began.
Unfortunately Dylan missed the start of the first heat because he lost a piece of padding for his helmet on the walk over. We found it and got him out after the first lap and he was able to move through the field and get his lap back and pass 3 of the drivers for a 9th place finish. I wish I had to GoPro on for that one but with the pre-race issues I did not.
The second heat was a fun race to watch. He was starting 3rd but spun going into the final turn on the warm-up lap. So he started 12th but quickly moved up to 6th. He continued climbing through the field and was in a battle for 3rd until a late spin (he blamed another kart but either way there was some bumping going both ways) on the final corner of the 2nd to last lap shuffled him back to 7th. It was good racing all of the way around and he was able to learn a few things out there.
He started the feature 7th and climbed up to 5th almost immediately. There was great side by side racing with 2 other karts for much of the race. He briefly captured 3rd after the final turn but had his front bumper knocked off in the process which caused him to lose speed and settle for 4th. He was upset as he probably could have avoided the car and got his first podium at the track but, again, it was a lesson learned.
Overall a great race day and race weekend with the Indy Car race at Road America.
